Industrial textile glossary
Technical textile terms do not all mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another. Here are the Baudchon definitions — precise, operational, aligned with workshop practice.
F
- Finishing treatment
- A finishing process applied to fabric to alter its in-use properties: feel, water repellency, anti-bacterial, flame-retardant, anti-static. A key step of textile finishing.
- France Terre Textile
- A label certifying textile companies for which at least 75% of manufacturing steps are carried out in France. Baudchon is France Terre Textile certified — see our commitments.
H
- High-end bedding
- Mattresses, bed bases and accessories using noble materials (wool, cotton, silk) and refined finishes (embroidery, placed designs, natural fillings). See the bedding sector.
M
- Made in France
- A mention indicating that a product was manufactured in France. For textiles, guaranteed by the France Terre Textile label. Baudchon manufactures 100% of its production in Clary (Hauts-de-France) since 1936.
- Mattress border
- The vertical surround of a mattress, generally quilted and embroidered. Typical width: 15 to 35 cm depending on mattress height. See our range.
- Mattress handle
- A quilted and embroidered textile piece integrated into the mattress perimeter to make it easier to handle. See our range.
- MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)
- The minimum quantity accepted for an industrial order. It varies according to product complexity, material and format. Specified case by case by our design office.
- Multi-head embroidery
- An industrial embroidery technique using several machine heads in parallel (up to 20+ heads) to produce identical patterns in series on a variety of textile substrates.
P
- Placed design
- Quilting where the pattern is precisely positioned on the material, with millimetre alignment on seams and cut marks. A signature technique of high-end bedding and prestige hospitality. See our approach.
- Polyamide
- A strong synthetic fibre (the nylon family). Used for technical wadding requiring durability and abrasion resistance.
- Polyester
- The most common synthetic fibre in industrial wadding. Excellent value for money, dimensional stability, fast drying. Suited to most bedding, medical and protection applications.
Q
- Quilted cotton
- Wadding based on cotton fibres. Chosen for its breathability, natural feel and thermal comfort. Favoured in premium natural bedding and high-end home linen.
- Quilted wool
- Wadding based on wool fibres. Chosen for its thermoregulating, hypoallergenic and natural moisture-management properties. Widely used in premium bedding and high-end duvets.
- Quilting
- A textile assembly technique joining two or more layers (fabric + wadding + fabric) by continuous stitching or by ultrasound. Synonym: industrial wadding. Our quilting offer.
R
- Recycled fibre
- A textile fibre made from recycled materials (PET bottles, cotton waste, post-consumer polyester). Used in wadding to reduce the carbon footprint of textile components.
T
- Technical foam
- A cellular material structuring comfort, support or protection (seating, packing, insulation). Baudchon cuts it to shape on specification, complementing wadding and quilting, with no fixed catalogue or online pricing. See technical foams or the cutting configurator.
- Textile finishing
- All the treatments applied to fabric after weaving and before making-up: dyeing, printing, coating, mechanical finishing, chemical treatments. The step that turns raw fabric into marketable fabric. Our textile finishing offer.
U
- Ultrasonic quilting
- Textile assembly by ultrasonic vibration, without needle or thread. Creates a thermo-mechanical weld between the layers. Essential in medical and hygiene applications (sealing, no perforations, wash resistance). Our ultrasonic offer.
W
- Wadding (material)
- A web of non-woven textile fibres, used as insulating, acoustic or comfort filling. Materials: polyester, cotton, wool, bamboo, recycled fibres. See our wadding range.
- Wadding (process)
- The operation of integrating a layer of wadding between two fabrics by stitching or ultrasound. Common synonym: light quilting. It is Baudchon’s historic expertise since 1936.
